As the fourth week of the engineering design project comes to an end, the design team has made a lot of progress towards its final goal. For starters, the driver that will be used for the speaker enclosures was purchased. The driver is a Tang Bang 5" full range driver that costs $45, leaving $30 to spend on materials to make the enclosure for the driver. This driver was chosen because it is fairly priced and has a wide frequency range (60-20,000Hz) that allows for testing the effect of the enclosure at high and low frequencies. Furthermore, the design team chose the top two materials that will be used to create the speaker enclosure. These two materials are oak wood and medium density fiberwood. The choice was based on qualities of the materials like the density, ability to absorb sound, and resonance properties. The final accomplishment this week was to decision on the dimensions of the box. At first, after some research, the team decided to use the golden ratio, which is a 1:1.6 height, 1:1 width, and 1:0.6 depth ratio to the speaker size. This poses a problem though, because the depth of the speaker is 3.25", but for the ratio to be correct the enclosure will have to be 3" deep, so more research will have to be done to address the effect of extending the depth a quarter inch. With this done, the team can start to purchase the materials and build the speaker boxes.
